Position Title: Mandarin Teacher Supervisor: Director of Mandarin Position Summary: Teachers of Mandarin at Concordia International School Shanghai are charged with the responsibility of delivering the subject curriculum to students using accepted best practices of instructional methodology, communicating student progress with parents, working in collaboration with team members to develop and deepen curricular units, participating fully in the required activities of the school, and supporting the learning and social development of all students with a high level of professionalism. REQUIREMENTS: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language Literature or Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language Chinese national teaching certificate Chinese national citizen Degree in Chinese Language Literature preferred Master degree in education is a plus EXPERIENCE: Minimum of four years school setting classroom teaching experience, not tutoring High degree of fluency in Mandarin is required, preference given to those who are also fluent English speakers International school or overseas teaching experience preferred SKILLS: Fluent spoken and written English and Mandarin General computer skills In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word Familiarity with student database systems is preferred Familiarity with U.S. educational system is preferred
Remuneration & Terms of Service a. The salary is determined by the salary scale for PRC faculty. b. Teachers are expected to be on campus from 7:30AM to 3:45PM during regular school days, until the end of the ECA when leading an activity, and until 5:00PM on professional meeting days. c. Teachers are on duty all student contact days plus workshops, conferences, pre and post school year workshops and in-service days. Teachers are not expected to work through the summer school break, nor holiday breaks in the academic calendar, except for the pre-determined in-service days. d. Leaves are granted, with administrative pre-approval, based upon Concordia’s leave policy unless mandated by Chinese Labor Law. e. Other duties as assigned.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Concordia teachers are expected to meet or exceed the teacher competency standards below.
1. Planning and Preparation 1) Instructional and curriculum Planning a. Use in-depth knowledge of content and Concordia curriculum outcomes, students, pedagogy and resources to design coherent instruction b. Plan, revise, record and follow units of work that provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences c. Select instructional goals d. Gather data through assessments and analyse and review student work to provide a clear, recursive, rigorous, relevant and rich curriculum
2. The Classroom Environment 1) Class Management a. Create an environment of respect and rapport b. Establish a culture of learning c. Manage classroom procedures and maintain clear rules and procedures; establish routines for daily tasks and needs d. Manage student behaviour and provide consistent and appropriate discipline e. Orchestrate smooth transitions and continuity of momentum f. Organise space and materials to provide effective instruction and a safe learning environment 2) Pastoral Care a. Respond to students’ emotional and social needs b. Model interpersonal skills, respectful relationships and problem-solving, in order to provide a safe learning environment
3. Instruction 1) Instruction a. Deliver developmentally appropriate learning experiences for students; Use a variety of questioning and discussion techniques to engage students in learning b. Provide differentiated support and instruction to ensure that students develop understanding of content and apply skills c. Provide timely and constructive feedback to students d. Implement best practice in instructional strategies 2) Assessment a. Assess student learning. Plan and administer a variety of appropriate diagnostic, formative and summative assessments b. Analyse and use the data provided by the assessments to guide instruction

Attend and actively participate in divisional departmental/grade level meetings as well as curricular and other all-school meetings that cross divisions b. Provide timely, clear and appropriate feedback on student performance and progress so that parents can effectively support and/or celebrate their child’s learning and development 3) Goals a. Set yearly individual and team goals; support divisional and school goals b. Collect and review data related to goals and Concordia competencies, in order to improve planning and preparation, classroom management, instruction or meeting professional responsibilities 4) Professional Development a. Participate in professional growth experiences such as courses, workshops or conferences in order to improve planning and preparation, classroom management, instruction and to overall grow and develop professionally 5) Extracurricular Activities—Addressing the needs of the whole child is an important part of our ethos and a Concordia teacher embraces opportunities to work with students beyond the classroom a. Contribute to the school and community by participating in one or more student activities outside of the classroom. Teachers lead or assist with an after-school activities/clubs, coach, and/or direct artistic performances in order to provide students with a variety of opportunities to widen their interests and develop alternate means of self-expression b. Participate actively in off-campus educational field-experiences c. Support student activities through attendance at and encouragement of student participation in extracurriculars
